The posting earlier tonight by Bob Masters concerning the service bulletin his dealer received regarding the tire scuffing problem, and finally an acknowledgment by Deere that there was a problem with the steering geometry, finally vindicates those of us who have been complaining about the tire scuffing for nearly a year. Many of us were criticized on this board claiming that the scuffing problem was due to high speed turning as well as unreasonable expectations for a tractor that weighed 3,000 pounds. Congratulations to the 4000 owners who refused to accept an inferior product. As I have said previously on this board, Deere never should have put this axle into production. The problem should have been caught by Augusta Works engineers and product testing people well before a decision was made for final production. I new there was a problem two minutes after operation on my yard.

Terry I would not jump for joy just yet. Yesterday I attended the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville KY. The John Deere Rep I talked with said that the only tractors that would be repaired were the one sold with turf tires. I guess they think that the people that got R1s & R4s will never drive on anything but plowed ground. I think that these are the tractors that should be repaired first as they do alot more damage to turf than the ones with turf tires. Before I purchased my 4400 with R4s I ask about the scuffing problem and was told that JD knew about the problem and it would be repaired. I now find that the word of the dealer means nothing & that JOHN DEERE does not have a problem with sticking it to there customers. I am now stuck with a piece of JOHN DEERE GREEN JUNK that I paid to much for because I thought I was buying from a reputable USA company. I am now either going to have spend another $1300.00 for turf tires & rims or sell it at a huge loss to get a tractor that I can drive on sod with out plowing the yard every time I turn.
I should have bought New Holland or Kubota.

Chris, if you needed a lawn mower you should have bought one. A Murray would have saved you a considerable sum of money, and judging from your post, some frustration also. ....

Chris,I would say frustration is well warranted.I visited with a customer of mine who this past fall bought a new 4400 to use in there dairy operation.The main use of there tractor was to clean stalls and to feed the cows with it.I asked for his comments on the 4400,and his reply was that he "loved it".When I informed him of all the scuff problems I'd been reading about on this forum,his reply was;why would anyone want to use such a heavy tractor to mow there yard?I realize that this scuff problem is happening the smaller units too,what's amazing to me is that Deere has expanded there assembly plant,and still can't keep up with demand.I'm sure there must be a very small percentage of buyers that don't know of forums like this and are finding out the hard way of some of the problems Deere is having.I wouldn't give up on your Dealer yet,as you know,the squeaky wheel gets the grease. ....

Walt I did not buy a lawn mower I already own one it is a John Deere 425 AWS. The experence with it played a big roll in my purchase of the 4400. I am in the remodeling business. Many jobs require driving many trips across finished lawns to get to the job site with gravel, dirt, mulch & materials. R4 tires work great until you turn. The John Deere sales information for the 4000 series does not say you can not turn these tractors on truf without damage. In my 25 years in the business I have seen & used many compacts & full sized utility tractors on jobs sites including JD, Ford/NH, Kubota, IH & others with ag & R4 tires. Depending on the size tractor some would leave impressions in the turf but none would peal the turf up when you turned. I also have a tiller to till gardens.this requires many turns on turf.
In the sales information there is a statement that reads the following.
"When you buy a John Deere you don't expect problems, but if one appears, your John Deere dealer can fix it. He services every thing he sells.
When you buy a tractor you're not just buying a machine, you're starting a partnership. Look hard at the company behind the tractor you buy. For over 160 years, no one has made a better partner than John Deere. That's the John Deere Advanage."
The mistake I made was believing that. Never again.

Chris,I agree with you completly.I bought a JD 4300 w/loader and ag tires
this past Aug.and was told the same thing.They wouldn't change the axel because I didn't buy a belly mower.Plus the "rear end" has gone out twice already.
And this is the second new tractor I have bought from them in the past ten years.So as far as the great John Deere service to loyal customers is concerned
you can forget it. Ken

Really---- what diference does it make anyway wheather your 4000 series
tractor scuffs? If they admit they have a bad axel why not change them
all? ....
